Oranges are a common fruit in our daily lives. They typically ripen and become available in October. However, now we can enjoy fresh and delicious oranges year-round. This is largely thanks to cold storage facilities. Cold storage keeps oranges at a suitable temperature for extended periods. It reduces their respiration rate and controls the growth of microorganisms on and inside the oranges. Moreover, it minimizes spoilage. As a result, it prolongs their storage and preservation.

We can classify cold storage for oranges into two types: orange preservation storage and orange controlled atmosphere storage. If using orange controlled atmosphere storage, it can keep oranges fresh for up to six months. On the other hand, orange preservation storage can keep oranges fresh for up to three to four months.

The optimal storage temperature for oranges in a cold storage facility is 3-5℃. Furthermore, the relative humidity must be controlled between 90% and 95%. If the humidity is insufficient, a regular air humidifier or a microwave air humidifier can be used. This helps maintain stable humidity levels within the storage area.

Note: Controlled atmosphere storage has the same storage temperature as fresh-keeping storage. However, it adds gas regulation on top of the temperature and humidity requirements of fresh-keeping storage.
